Definition
A rattlesnake or any creature that makes a rattling sound, or something that causes disruption or excitement.
Etymology
From Middle English 'ratlen,' which imitates the sound itself (onomatopoeia). The '-er' suffix indicates something that does the action. The word has been used for rattlesnakes since the 1600s in America.
Kelly Says
A rattlesnake's rattle is actually made of modified scales at the tail tip, and each time the snake sheds its skin, a new 'rattle' segment is added—so counting segments can tell you roughly how old the snake is!
