Reflux

/ˈriflʌks/ noun

Definition

The backward flow of liquid, especially stomach acid into the esophagus causing heartburn. In chemistry, the process of boiling a liquid and condensing its vapor back into the same container.

Etymology

From Latin 'refluxus,' past participle of 'refluere' (re- 'back' + fluere 'to flow'). First used in English in the 17th century for tidal movements, then extended to medical and chemical contexts by the 18th century.

Kelly Says

Reflux is nature's rebellion against gravity - whether it's stomach acid traveling upward or a chemical vapor condensing back down, it represents the fascinating ways liquids can defy their expected direction. The word perfectly captures this 'flowing backward' phenomenon across multiple scientific fields.
