Rehabilitate

/ˌriːhəˈbɪlɪˌteɪt/ verb

Definition

To rehabilitate is to help someone or something return to a healthy, useful, or normal condition after illness, injury, or trouble.

Etymology

From Latin *rehabilitare* (to restore, make able again), from *re-* (again) + *habilis* (able, fit). It literally means making someone able again.

Kelly Says

Rehabilitation isn’t just about fixing what’s broken; it’s about restoring power and ability. Whether it’s an injury, an addiction, or a damaged building, the goal is the same: not just survival, but usefulness and dignity again.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

"Rehabilitate" has been used in criminal justice, medical, and social contexts, sometimes with gendered assumptions about who is redeemable or how women should be "rehabilitated" into traditional roles. In media, women’s reputations have often been framed as needing rehabilitation after moralized scandals.

Inclusive Usage

Use the term with clear criteria and avoid gendered double standards about whose image or behavior is seen as needing rehabilitation.

Inclusive Alternatives

["restore","support recovery","reintegrate","repair reputation"]

Empowerment Note

Recognize the work of women professionals in rehabilitation fields (medicine, social work, law) and of women and gender-diverse people who have advocated for more humane, less punitive approaches.
