Remorse

/rɪˈmɔːrs/ noun

Definition

A deep and painful feeling of regret for something wrong you have done.

Etymology

From Latin *remorsus* “bitten again,” from *remordere* “to bite back,” from *re-* “again” and *mordere* “to bite.” It pictures guilt as something that keeps biting at you inside.

Kelly Says

Remorse is literally your conscience ‘biting back’ at you. That’s why it feels physically sharp or heavy, even though nothing touches you from the outside.
