Renegotiate

/riːnɪˈɡoʊʃiˌeɪt/ verb

Definition

To negotiate again or differently; to discuss and arrange new terms for an existing agreement. To revise the conditions of a contract, treaty, or arrangement through fresh negotiations.

Etymology

From 're-' (again) plus 'negotiate,' where 'negotiate' comes from Latin 'negotiatus,' past participle of 'negotiari' meaning 'to carry on business.' The Latin root 'negotium' means 'business, occupation,' literally 'not leisure' (neg- + otium).

Kelly Says

The word 'renegotiate' reveals an interesting paradox about agreements - we make them to create certainty, but life changes so much that we often need to unmake and remake them. In our modern world, the ability to renegotiate has become as important as the original negotiation, reflecting our dynamic, fast-changing society.
