Reprogramming

/ˌriːˈproʊɡræmɪŋ/ verb

Definition

Changing the instructions or code that tells a computer or device what to do; rewriting software or resetting instructions.

Etymology

From re- (again) + programming (from program, Greek programma = a public notice written beforehand). The 're-' prefix shows the action is happening a second time or in a new way.

Kelly Says

When hackers reprogram devices, they're essentially rewriting the device's 'brain'—which is why cybersecurity is so critical, because reprogramming a car's computer or a medical device could be dangerous in ways old-fashioned vandalism never was.
