Definition
Research is the careful study of a subject to discover new information or reach new understandings. To research is to investigate something in a systematic, organized way.
Etymology
From Old French *recherche* meaning 'a search', from *rechercher* 'to seek out', based on *chercher* 'to search'. The prefix *re-* adds the sense of searching thoroughly or again.
Kelly Says
Research isn’t just 'looking things up'; it’s more like detective work with rules and evidence. Real research often produces more questions than answers, which is why it never truly ends.

Ethical Language Guidance
Gender History
Research practices have historically underrepresented women and gender minorities as subjects and as researchers, leading to biased findings and gaps in knowledge. Many fields normalized male bodies and experiences as the default, particularly in medicine and social science.
Inclusive Usage
Use 'research' with attention to whose data and perspectives are included; specify when samples are gender-skewed or when findings may not generalize. Avoid implying that early, male-centered research is universally applicable.
Empowerment Note
Acknowledge women researchers and research participants whose contributions were overlooked or anonymized, and highlight work that corrected gender bias in fields like clinical trials, labor economics, and education.
