Definition
Respective means relating separately to each of the people or things that have been mentioned. It matches items in one group to items in another group in order.
Etymology
From Latin *respectivus* 'regarding each in turn', based on *respectus* 'regard'. English kept the idea of looking at things one by one in relation to each other.
Kelly Says
When a sentence says, 'The students and their respective teachers,' it’s quietly doing the matching for you: each student with their own teacher. It’s a small word that saves a lot of repetition.
