Definition
Respiration is the process of breathing in and out, which brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide. In biology, it also refers to the chemical reactions in cells that release energy from food.
Etymology
From Latin *respiratio* 'breathing', from *respirare* 'to breathe again', from *re-* 'again' + *spirare* 'to breathe'. The 'again' suggests the repeated cycle of breathing.
Kelly Says
Respiration is your body's quiet power plant—every breath feeds tiny cell engines you never see. The same word covers both the air in your lungs and the chemistry inside your cells, linking the visible and invisible sides of staying alive.
