Definition
To respond is to say or do something as a reaction to what has been said or done. Responses can be quick or delayed, and can be words, actions, or even silence.
Etymology
From Latin *respondere* 'to answer, promise in return', from *re-* 'back' + *spondere* 'to pledge'. The original sense included the idea of answering with responsibility.
Kelly Says
Respond is broader than 'answer'—you can respond emotionally, physically, or socially, not just with words. Even not responding is a kind of response, which is why silence can feel so powerful.
