Restricting

/rɪˈstrɪktɪŋ/ verb

Definition

Present participle of restrict; limiting or controlling the extent, amount, or range of something.

Etymology

From Latin 'restrictus', past participle of 'restringere' meaning 'to bind back' or 'confine', from 're-' (back) + 'stringere' (to bind tight). The meaning has remained consistent since entering English in the 16th century.

Kelly Says

The word restricting shares its DNA with 'stringent' and 'strict' - they all come from the Latin idea of binding tightly, like pulling strings taut. It's interesting that we use the same root to describe both physical constraints (like a restrictive garment) and abstract limitations (like restrictive laws).
