Definition
Income generated from normal business operations, or the total amount of income generated by the sale of goods or services. Government income from taxes and other sources.
Etymology
From Old French 'revenue', meaning 'a return', from 'revenir' meaning 'to return', ultimately from Latin 'revenire'. The word originally described income that 'returned' to a landowner from their property, evolving to mean any recurring income.
Kelly Says
The concept of revenue as something that 'returns' reflects medieval thinking about wealth as cyclical - what you plant comes back to you as harvest, what you invest returns as profit. This agricultural metaphor persists in modern business language, where we still talk about 'reaping' profits and 'sowing' investments.
