Revolts

/rɪˈvoʊlts/ verb

Definition

Refuses to obey authority, or rises up in armed resistance against a government or ruler.

Etymology

From Latin 'revolvere' (to turn back, rotate), where 're-' means 'back' and 'volvere' means 'to turn.' The sense of 'turning against' authority developed metaphorically. In French it became 'révolte' before entering English.

Kelly Says

Throughout history, revolutions and revolts start the same way—people decide to literally 'turn back' from their path of obedience, which is why the word keeps this 'turning' root even though we're not actually rotating anything!
