Rhinoceros

/raɪˈnɑː.sə.rəs/ noun

Definition

A rhinoceros is a large, heavy animal with thick skin and one or two horns on its nose, found mostly in Africa and Asia. Many species of rhinoceros are endangered due to hunting and habitat loss.

Etymology

From Latin *rhinoceros*, from Greek *rhinokerōs*, from *rhīs, rhinos* “nose” + *keras* “horn.” The name literally means “nose-horn.”

Kelly Says

The word rhinoceros is basically a little biology lesson in Greek: it literally spells out “nose-horn.” Once you know that, *rhino* and *ceros* stop sounding random and start sounding like a label built from parts.
