Rhymes

/raɪmz/ noun

Definition

Words that end with the same sound, or verses/poems that use such matching sounds.

Etymology

From Old French rime, possibly from Germanic roots. Interestingly, the word rhyme itself was often spelled 'rime' in Middle English, and the 'h' was added later through incorrect association with Greek 'rhythm.'

Kelly Says

The 'h' in 'rhyme' is basically a mistake—medieval scholars added it thinking the word came from Greek 'rhythmos,' but it actually came from Germanic languages, so linguistically we've been spelling it wrong for 500+ years!
