Definition
Elegant, fancy, or luxurious in a showy way; high-class or expensive-looking.
Etymology
From the Ritz Hotel, the famous luxury hotel in Paris opened in 1898 by César Ritz; the word was popularized to describe anything as fancy as the Ritz.
Kelly Says
César Ritz actually invented the idea of modern luxury hotel service—he pioneered the notion that hotels should cater to guests' every whim, and his name became so synonymous with elegance that we still use it casually as slang, more than a century later.
