Living in a rented room, usually as a temporary arrangement; the practice of renting rooms in someone's house.
Etymology
From 'room' (a space in a building) + '-ing' (verb suffix). The practice of renting individual rooms became common in industrialized cities in the 1800s when workers migrated to cities for factory jobs.

Rooming houses were essential to industrialization—thousands of workers poured into cities and lived in shared rooming houses, sometimes with multiple people per room working different shifts! This created tight-knit communities and also terrible overcrowding problems that led to modern tenement reform.
