Route

/ruːt/ noun

Definition

A route is the way you go from one place to another, like a road, path, or planned course. It can also mean the usual way something travels, such as a bus route or delivery route.

Etymology

From Old French *rute* or *route*, meaning 'road' or 'way', which came from Latin *rupta (via)*, literally 'broken (way)', a road made by breaking through obstacles. Over time, it came to mean any established path between places.

Kelly Says

The idea of a 'route' started as a 'broken way' cut through wild land—imagine people literally smashing a path through forests and rocks. Every modern route, even on a GPS, is a digital echo of that original breaking-through. When you choose a new route, you're repeating a very old human habit: carving out better paths.
