Definition
The enzyme that catalyzes the first step of carbon fixation in photosynthesis by combining CO2 with a 5-carbon sugar. It's considered the most abundant protein on Earth and is essential for converting atmospheric carbon into organic molecules.
Etymology
An acronym for 'Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase,' describing both its substrate (ribulose bisphosphate) and its dual function as both a carboxylase (fixing CO2) and an oxygenase (binding oxygen). The nickname 'RuBisCO' became widely adopted for convenience.
Kelly Says
RuBisCO is probably the most important enzyme you've never heard of - it's so abundant that it makes up about 50% of all leaf protein and is responsible for almost all the carbon fixation on Earth! Ironically, it's also notoriously slow and inefficient, working only about 3 times per second.
