Definition
taking pleasure or satisfaction from causing pain or humiliation to other people.
Etymology
Named after the Marquis de Sade, an 18th-century French aristocrat infamous for describing these behaviors in his writings. The term was coined in the late 1800s by psychologists to describe this psychological trait.
Kelly Says
The Marquis de Sade was a real person—an aristocrat and writer whose works were so shocking they got him imprisoned in the Bastille. His name became so associated with cruelty that the entire psychological concept was named after him, making him one of the few people whose name became a mental health term.
