Definition
Saffron is a very valuable spice made from the dried red parts of a special crocus flower. It gives food a golden color and a unique, slightly sweet flavor.
Etymology
From Old French *safran*, from Medieval Latin *safranum*, from Arabic *za‘farān*. The word traveled along with the spice through trade routes from the Middle East into Europe.
