Salter

/ˈsɔltər/ noun

Definition

A person or device that adds salt to something, or historically, a merchant who sells or trades salt.

Etymology

From 'salt' (the mineral seasoning) plus '-er' (one who does). Salt was once so valuable it was used as currency—salters were important traders in medieval Europe.

Kelly Says

Salt was literally worth its weight in gold in medieval times—Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt, which is where the word 'salary' comes from, and salt traders became incredibly wealthy!
