Sandy

/ˈsændi/ adjective

Definition

Containing, covered with, or resembling sand; having a light yellowish-brown color like sand.

Etymology

From Old English 'sandig,' derived from 'sand' plus the suffix '-y.' The word sand itself comes from Germanic roots meaning 'to grind,' referring to the fine particles created by erosion and weathering of rocks.

Kelly Says

Sandy hair color gets its name from beach sand, but ironically, most beach sand is actually quite white or gray - the 'sandy' color we think of comes more from desert sands rich in iron oxide. The geological process that creates sand is essentially nature's way of grinding down mountains grain by grain.
