A Greek island in the Aegean Sea, famous for its dramatic volcanic landscape, white-washed buildings, and stunning sunsets. Part of the Cyclades island group.
Etymology
Named 'Santa Irini' (Saint Irene) by the Venetians in the 13th century, later corrupted to Santorini. The ancient name was Thera, after the Spartan leader Theras who colonized it, or possibly from 'theros' meaning beast.

Santorini's iconic blue-domed churches and white buildings aren't just picturesque - the white lime paint reflects sunlight to keep buildings cool, while the blue domes were mandated during Ottoman rule to match the Greek flag colors as an act of subtle rebellion. The island's crescent shape results from one of history's most powerful volcanic eruptions around 1600 BCE.
