Scanners

/ˈskænərz/ noun

Definition

Devices that examine or read something systematically, such as document scanners, medical imaging equipment, or barcode readers.

Etymology

From 'scan' plus '-er' suffix. 'Scan' comes from Latin 'scandere' meaning 'to climb,' which developed the sense of 'to examine verse meter' (climbing through syllables), then broadened to mean systematic examination. The electronic device sense emerged in the mid-20th century.

Kelly Says

The evolution from 'climbing' to 'scanning' beautifully captures how we conceptualize systematic examination—we metaphorically 'climb' through information line by line. Modern scanners work by literally scanning light across surfaces, making the metaphor surprisingly literal as light 'climbs' across documents to capture their content.
