A painful condition affecting the sciatic nerve, usually causing sharp pain in the lower back, buttocks, and down the leg.
Etymology
From Medieval Latin sciatica (the disease), from Greek iskiadikos (relating to the hip/buttock). The root is iskion (hip joint).
