Scorpions

/ˈskɔrpiənz/ noun

Definition

Arachnids with segmented tails ending in venomous stingers, found primarily in warm climates. They are predatory arthropods related to spiders and have pincers for grasping prey.

Etymology

From Old French 'scorpion', derived from Latin 'scorpio', which came from Greek 'skorpios'. The root may be related to an ancient Mediterranean word meaning 'to cut', referring to their pincers.

Kelly Says

Scorpions are among Earth's oldest land animals, virtually unchanged for 400 million years - they were already ancient when dinosaurs appeared. Despite their fearsome reputation, only about 25 of the 2,000 scorpion species have venom dangerous to humans.
