Scouts

/skaʊts/ noun

Definition

plural of scout; people who search for information or talent; members of scouting organizations

Etymology

from Old French 'escouter' meaning 'to listen', from Latin 'auscultare'

Kelly Says

Scouts originally got their name because they 'listened' for enemy movements - the word comes from the same root as 'auscultation' (listening to body sounds with a stethoscope)! Modern scouts still gather information, just usually about campsites instead of armies.
