Scrolling

/ˈskroʊlɪŋ/ verb

Definition

Moving text or images up or down on a screen to view different parts of a document or webpage. Also refers to the continuous movement through digital content.

Etymology

From Middle English 'scrowle' meaning a roll of parchment, derived from Old French 'escroue'. The modern digital sense emerged in the 1960s with computer interfaces, maintaining the metaphor of unrolling a scroll to reveal new content.

Kelly Says

The word beautifully bridges ancient and modern worlds - from medieval scribes unrolling parchments to reveal text, to today's endless social media feeds. Interestingly, the gesture of scrolling has become so fundamental to modern life that it's one of the first motor skills toddlers learn on touchscreens!
