Scullery

/ˈskʌləri/ noun

Definition

A small kitchen or room in a house where washing, cleaning, and rough food preparation work is done, especially in older homes.

Etymology

From Old French 'escuelerie' meaning a place for dishes, from 'escuelle' meaning bowl or dish. It became an English word in the 15th century to describe a servant's work area separate from the main kitchen in large houses.

Kelly Says

In old English manor houses, sculleries were where servants did the truly gross work—like boiling offal and scrubbing dishes—completely hidden from where fancy people ate, creating an invisible servants' world behind the scenes!

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Historically gendered space where women servants worked in extreme conditions; language encodes class and gender invisibility of kitchen labor.

Inclusive Usage

Use 'kitchen' or 'dishwashing area' for modern contexts; acknowledge scullery as historical marker of gendered labor exploitation.

Inclusive Alternatives

["kitchen","dishwashing area","service kitchen"]

Empowerment Note

Scullery maids were primarily women and girls; historical recognition of their labor and organizing (union movements) honors working-class women's agency.
