Sector

/ˈsɛktər/ noun

Definition

A sector is a specific part or area of a larger system, such as part of an economy, a circle, or a city.

Etymology

From Latin “sector” meaning “a cutter,” from “secare” meaning “to cut.” In geometry it came to mean a “slice” of a circle, and from there a “slice” of society or industry.

Kelly Says

Calling something a “sector” is like saying it’s a slice of a bigger pie—health sector, tech sector, public sector. The word quietly suggests that no part of society stands alone; it’s always a slice of something larger.
