Definition
A person who abandons their principles for money or success, or an event where all tickets are sold.
Etymology
Compound of 'sell' + 'out.' Originally a business term meaning 'sold all inventory,' it gained the moral criticism meaning in the mid-20th century when it was applied to artists and musicians.
Kelly Says
The idea of a 'sellout' is actually quite modern—in medieval times, changing your allegiance for money was normal and expected! The judgment only emerged when we developed romantic ideas about artistic integrity in the 1900s.
