Senility

/sɪˈnɪləti/ noun

Definition

the mental decline and loss of memory or thinking ability that can happen in very old age.

Etymology

From Latin senilis (of old age), from senex (old man). The term originally just meant 'old age' but evolved to describe the cognitive problems associated with extreme old age.

Kelly Says

Modern doctors now prefer terms like 'dementia' because 'senility' is outdated and inaccurate—not all old people experience it, and it can happen at younger ages—but the word stuck around in everyday language even though it doesn't match modern medicine anymore.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

Senility was historically coded as affecting women's rationality and judgment disproportionately; medical literature from the 19th-20th centuries attributed women's cognitive decline to hormonal changes, while treating male cognitive decline as neutral age-related pathology. This gendered diagnostic framing affected treatment access and credibility of elderly women.

Inclusive Usage

Use clinically precise terms: 'cognitive decline,' 'dementia,' or specific diagnoses. Avoid senility as it carries outdated gendered pathology assumptions.

Inclusive Alternatives

["cognitive decline","dementia","neurocognitive disorder"]

Empowerment Note

Women physicians and gerontologists (e.g., Joanne Lynn, Linda P. Fried) reclaimed aging research by studying cognitive health equity and challenging ageist/sexist assumptions about women's mental capacity.
