Definition
Presence of disease-causing bacteria and their toxins in the bloodstream, also called blood poisoning. A serious condition that can lead to septic shock and organ failure.
Etymology
From Greek 'septikos' (putrefying) and 'haima' (blood). Coined in the 1860s when scientists first understood that microscopic organisms in blood could cause systemic illness, revolutionizing the understanding of infectious disease.
Kelly Says
Septicemia kills more people in hospitals than heart attacks, yet many people have never heard of it. Your immune system's overwhelming response to bacteria in the blood can actually cause more damage than the bacteria themselves, leading to widespread inflammation that shuts down vital organs.
