Definition
A talk or speech, usually religious in nature, given by a priest or minister to teach or inspire people.
Etymology
From Latin 'sermo' meaning 'speech' or 'conversation.' Originally meant any serious talk, but became specialized for religious teaching by religious speakers in church.
Kelly Says
The word 'sermon' has become so associated with boring lectures that even non-religious people say 'don't give me a sermon'—but originally it just meant a good conversation. One meaning ruins the reputation of the word forever.
