Shaka

/ˈʃɑkə/ noun

Definition

A hand gesture common in Hawaiian culture, made by extending the thumb and little finger while folding the other fingers. A greeting expressing friendship, understanding, or solidarity.

Etymology

Origin uncertain, possibly from Hawaiian pidgin. Some attribute it to Hamana Kalili, a sugar plantation worker who lost his three middle fingers in an accident. The gesture may also derive from Spanish 'está bueno' (it's good).

Kelly Says

The shaka embodies the spirit of aloha in a simple gesture - it's impossible to make a shaka while clenching your fist in anger! This peaceful hand sign has spread globally as a symbol of laid-back, positive vibes, carrying Hawaiian culture far beyond the islands.
