Etymology
From the Shawnee word 'Shaawanwa' meaning 'southerner', referring to their geographic position relative to other Algonquian tribes. The name was adapted into English through French colonial records.
Kelly Says
The Shawnee were remarkable for their mobility and adaptability - they migrated across vast distances from the Southeast to the Great Lakes and back, maintaining their cultural identity while becoming master diplomats who played European powers against each other during colonial times.
