Definition
Aquatic invertebrates with shells or shell-like exoskeletons, including mollusks and crustaceans, commonly eaten as seafood.
Etymology
Compound word from 'shell' (Old English 'scell') + 'fish' (Old English 'fisc'), though technically most shellfish are not true fish but invertebrates. The term has been used since the 14th century.
Kelly Says
Despite their name, shellfish aren't fish at all - they're more closely related to insects and spiders than to salmon or tuna. Lobsters are essentially sea insects, and if you're allergic to shellfish, you might also react to eating insects due to similar proteins in their exoskeletons.
