Definition
Removing the outer shell or husk from nuts, seeds, or seafood; or in military contexts, bombarding with artillery fire.
Etymology
From 'shell' (Old English for a hard outer covering), with the '-ing' suffix to form the gerund. The military sense emerged in the 1800s when artillery shells became the dominant weapons.
Kelly Says
The word 'shell' for both the protective casing of mollusks and the ammunition came from comparing the shape and explosive nature of artillery rounds to actual seashells—a metaphor that stuck.
