Sheriff

/ˈʃer.ɪf/ noun

Definition

An official responsible for enforcing the law in a county or region, especially in the United States and historically in England. Sheriffs may run jails, serve legal papers, and provide police services.

Etymology

From Old English 'scīrgerēfa', a compound of 'scīr' (shire, county) + 'gerēfa' (reeve, official). Over time, 'shire-reeve' was shortened and altered to become 'sheriff'.

Kelly Says

A 'sheriff' is literally a 'shire-reeve'—the top official of a county in old England, a title that wandered into American Western movies. Under the cowboy hat is a thousand-year-old job description.

Ethical Language Guidance

Gender History

'Sheriff' has historically been a male-dominated role in many jurisdictions, and media depictions often reinforce the image of a male lawman. Women and gender-diverse people in law enforcement roles have often been minimized or stereotyped.

Inclusive Usage

Use 'sheriff' for the role regardless of the officeholder's gender, and avoid assuming sheriffs are male; specify 'sheriff's office' or 'sheriff's department' when referring to institutions.

Inclusive Alternatives

["law enforcement officer","county officer"]

Empowerment Note

When discussing law enforcement history, include women sheriffs, deputies, and administrators whose contributions are often omitted.
