Definition
Appearing untrustworthy or dishonest; tending to avoid looking directly at people, or constantly changing.
Etymology
From 'shift' (to change position or move), plus '-y' (adjective suffix). Originally described things that moved or changed, then evolved to describe evasive, untrustworthy behavior.
Kelly Says
Eye contact science shows that 'shifty' eyes—looking away, darting glances—can signal deception, but it's not reliable; nervous, shy people look shifty too, which is why the stereotype is actually misleading.
