Definition
A city in northwestern Louisiana, United States, located on the Red River. It serves as the commercial and cultural center of the Ark-La-Tex region.
Etymology
Named after Captain Henry Miller Shreve, who cleared the Red River of a massive logjam called the Great Raft in the 1830s. The 'port' suffix reflects its role as a river port, combining the personal name with the geographic function.
Kelly Says
Shreveport owes its existence to one of America's most remarkable engineering feats - Captain Shreve spent years clearing a 165-mile-long natural dam of fallen trees that had blocked the Red River for over 1,000 years. This massive logjam removal not only created the city but fundamentally altered the ecology and hydrology of Louisiana, showing how human intervention can literally reshape landscapes.
