Shrinking

/ˈʃrɪŋkɪŋ/ verb

Definition

Becoming smaller in size, amount, or value; withdrawing or recoiling from something.

Etymology

From Old English scrincan meaning 'to wrinkle, shrivel up.' The word evolved from Proto-Germanic *skrinkanan, related to the idea of drawing together or contracting. The psychological sense of 'recoiling' developed in the 16th century.

Kelly Says

The word 'shrinking' captures both physical and psychological retreat - from a sweater in hot water to a person avoiding confrontation. Interestingly, 'shrink' as slang for psychiatrist comes from the idea of 'head-shrinker,' originally a reference to certain tribal practices but later applied humorously to mental health professionals.
