Definition
A medical device or surgical connection that diverts fluid from one part of the body to another, bypassing the normal route. Common examples include ventriculoperitoneal shunts for draining excess brain fluid and dialysis shunts for blood access.
Etymology
From Middle English 'shunten' meaning to turn aside or avoid. The medical application developed in the 20th century as surgeons created artificial pathways to redirect bodily fluids around obstructions or damaged areas.
Kelly Says
Ventriculoperitoneal shunts have a remarkable one-way valve system that automatically opens when brain pressure gets too high and closes when it normalizes - it's like having a smart pressure relief valve protecting the brain 24/7. Some shunts can be adjusted externally with a magnet to change the pressure settings without surgery!
