Sienna

/siˈɛnə/ noun

Definition

Sienna is a reddish-brown or yellowish-brown earth pigment used in paints and art. The color name is also used to describe objects with that warm, earthy tone.

Etymology

“Sienna” comes from Italian “terra di Siena,” meaning ‘earth of Siena,’ after the city of Siena in Italy where the pigment was originally produced. The soil there naturally contains iron oxides that give it the distinctive color. The place name gradually became the color name.

Kelly Says

Many color words are secretly geography lessons: sienna is literally ‘dirt from Siena.’ Burnt sienna is that same earth heated to deepen the color. When you look at a paint tube, you’re often seeing the travel history of minerals turned into art.
