Simvastatin

/sɪmˈvæstətɪn/ noun

Definition

A statin medication derived from fungus that lowers cholesterol by blocking HMG-CoA reductase enzyme. It's prescribed to reduce cardiovascular events and is typically taken in the evening when the body produces most of its cholesterol.

Etymology

From 'sim-' (simplified, as it was a modified version of lovastatin) + 'vastatin'. Originally derived from Aspergillus terreus fungus, it was developed as a semi-synthetic improvement over the first statin, lovastatin, in the 1980s.

Kelly Says

Simvastatin comes from the same type of fungus used to make soy sauce and was discovered when scientists noticed that people in Japan had lower cholesterol levels! The evening dosing isn't just convenience - your liver makes most cholesterol between midnight and 6 AM, so taking it at bedtime blocks production when it's highest.
