Definition
A preliminary drawing made in red-brown pigment on a wall or panel as preparation for a fresco or painting, serving as a guide for the final work.
Etymology
From Latin sinopis, derived from Greek Sinope, a city on the Black Sea famous for its red ochre deposits. The pigment made from this red earth became synonymous with preparatory drawings in Renaissance art.
Kelly Says
When restorers remove damaged frescoes, they often discover these hidden sinopia drawings underneath—like finding the artist's original thoughts! Michelangelo's sinopia for the Sistine Chapel would be priceless if it survived, showing us his initial creative process before he painted over it with the final masterpiece.
