Sketches

/ˈskɛtʃɪz/ noun, verb

Definition

Quick, rough drawings done without much detail; or comedy performances that are short and funny.

Etymology

From Dutch 'schets' and Italian 'schizzo,' possibly from Greek 'schedios' (hasty). The word originally meant a hastily drawn outline and entered English in the 1600s. Now applies to both visual art and comedic performances.

Kelly Says

Sketches are the artist's shorthand—da Vinci filled notebooks with sketches that explored ideas before painting masterpieces. Similarly, comedy sketches are mini-stories that test what's funny, just like art sketches test composition.
