Definition
To remove something from the surface of a liquid, or to read something quickly without studying details.
Etymology
Possibly from Old Norse or related to 'scum.' The word entered Middle English with the meaning of removing surface material, and expanded to metaphorical 'skimming' through text.
Kelly Says
When you 'skim' text, your brain is actually doing something scientifically sophisticated—extracting key words and patterns—which is why people who skim often understand main ideas better than slow readers who miss the forest for the trees.
