Slicing

/ˈslaɪsɪŋ/ verb, noun

Definition

Cutting something into thin, flat pieces with a sharp blade, or in golf, hitting the ball so it curves to the right (for right-handed players).

Etymology

From Old French 'eslicier' meaning 'to break apart,' possibly from a Germanic root. The word was used for cutting in the 1300s and the golf meaning developed much later.

Kelly Says

In golf, a slice happens because of the way the club face angles when it hits the ball—it's one of the most frustrating shots beginners make, yet the same cutting motion is basic to cooking!
